The Ecommerce Leaky Bucket for Indian Stores

An apparel store shipping from Bangalore bought more sessions every month and watched the order count stay flat. The merchandiser blamed ads. A phone recording told a plainer story. Shoppers in Mumbai added a kurta priced at ₹2,499, saw GST appear as a surprise at the last step, and left. Pune buyers who chose UPI were sent to a bank app and returned to an empty cart. Delhi customers on desktop fared a little better and still met a coupon field that errored. The bucket was full at the top and open at the bottom.

High traffic, low orders

Sessions are not demand you captured. In the planning model 73% of mobile carts and 58% of desktop carts were left unpaid. That is a conversion problem sitting on top of whatever brought the visit. Buying more visits before the leak is fixed is how a GST invoice for ads grows while Razorpay settlements do not.

Carts left unpaid Mobile 73% Desktop 58% Recovered by email 16% of left carts
Illustrative scenario. Unpaid carts and email recovery in a planning model for an Indian apparel store. Not a client result.

Checkout friction

  • Show a GST-inclusive price on the product page, not only at payment.
  • Keep the cart when a shopper returns from a UPI app. Test Razorpay in the company account, on a mid-range phone.
  • Offer COD only where you can fulfil it, with the fee visible before the last button.
  • Cut the form to what a courier needs. Eleven fields are a leak.

If the theme cannot do this, the conversation becomes a checkout rebuild, not another campaign.

Technical issues that hide products

Collection pages were slow, faceted URLs were being indexed in duplicate, and size variants shared one title. None of that is a promise about rankings. It is why a ready-to-buy query landed on a filter URL with no price. Technical search fixes here mean canonical tags, unique titles, and a product page that loads. Measure product views that add to cart, not a position chart.

The email after they leave

Abandoned-cart email, sent to people who had already shared an address, recovered 16% of left carts in the model. One message with the item, the GST-inclusive total, and a single link. A second message the next day only if the first was unopened. WhatsApp can follow for high-value orders if the number was given on purpose. Do not scrape contacts from a courier plugin and call it a strategy.

An illustrative picture

The same traffic, after the price display, the UPI return, and the email, produced more prepaid orders in the model without a larger ad line. Use the 73%, 58%, and 16% figures as a workshop prompt with your team in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, or Pune. They are not a result from a named label. Audit your store before you fund the next burst of visits.
